Amazing Yamaguchi Marvel Revoltech Captain America Figure
If you’re the type of collector who likes to display and pose their figures instead of keeping them mint in the packaging, then the Amazing Yamaguchi Revoltech line is right up your alley. Marvel’s Captain America is the latest addition, featuring a staggering 13 joints and 38 points of articulation, plus swappable heads, hands, Cap’s shield, and plastic stands for supporting the figure in almost any pose imaginable. Hot Toys 1/6th-Scale Jedi Training Rey
Hot Toys already released a sixth-scale version of Rey when Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit theatres, but the head sculpt didn’t quite look like actress Daisy Ridley. For The Last Jedi, Hot Toys is taking another shot at it, with a much-improved head sculpt, updated costume, and 28 points of articulation. The new Jedi Training version of Rey also includes a glowing lightsaber accessory — but more importantly, it comes with a pair of tiny but highly-detailed Porgs, if you needed some way to justify dropping a few hundred bucks when this 28cm figure becomes available sometime next year. Stranger Things Monopoly & Ouija
With the second season’s debut just around the corner, and more seasons to presumably follow, it’s officially safe for Netflix to crank the Stranger Things’ marketing machine to full power. To date we’ve only seen a handful of figures based on the series, but soon you’ll find Stranger Things versions of Monopoly and Ouija on toy store shelves as well. Monopoly: Stranger Things Edition ($US25 ($32)) includes duplicate versions of houses, hotels, and tokens that represent each’s alternate version in the Upside Down, while the Ouija Game ($US20 ($25)) recreates the Christmas lights Joyce Byers used to communicate with her son, Will. There’s also a $US15 ($19) Eggo waffles-themed card game enroute, which seems to be similar to Uno — but more delicious. [Hasbro Games]
Funko Disney Afternoon Action Figures
Funko might be best known for its figures that look like oddly-shaped caricatures of pop culture icons, but the toymaker does occasionally produce figures that stay true to their subject matter. Available later this fall is a new series of three to four-inch tall figures based on characters from Disney cartoons that graced the afternoon airwaves a few decades ago. That includes Scrooge McDuck from DuckTales, Baloo from TaleSpin, Chip and Dale (and Zipper) from Rescue Rangers, and Darkwing Duck — but, unfortunately, no Fenton Crackshell or Gizmoduck. Transforming Voltron Digital Watch
Smartwatches can do everything from helping you find a restaurant, to even ordering dinner. So why would you want a watch with a basic LCD screen that only tells the time? If you have to ask that question, you’re probably not a child of the ’80s who grew up with a series of awesome timepieces that transformed into robots. This $US15 ($19) transforming Voltron watch from ThinkGeek is all about the nostalgia, with five points of articulation when removed from its band giving you a covert toy to play with when no one’s looking. Mattel & Dash Robotics’ Kamigami
In 2013, a company called Dash Robotics was founded by a team of researchers from schools like UC Berkeley, Stanford, and Carnegie Mellon, whose goal was to create simple robots that could easily scurry over complex terrains by copying how creatures like insects and lizards move. The company’s robotic creations impressed engineers but were adored by kids, so Dash has teamed up with Mattel for a series of $US50 ($63) DIY robot insect kits called Kamigami. Once assembled, the creatures can be programmed or steered remotely using a mobile device and app, and each one features removable shells that can be swapped out to create different kinds of creepy crawlies.
