The Next Chapter Of It Will Be Darker And Introduce New Kinds Of Demons

There was always going to be a second chapter to the cinematic reboot of Stephen King’s It. Not necessarily a sequel, but rather a continuation of the story of the Losers Club, after they first defeat Pennywise and go on to become adults.

Though the followup film has yet to be officially greenlit or announced by Warner Bros., It director Andy Muschietti already has a set of ideas and plans swirling around in the sewers of his mind.

The next It movie, Muschietti insisted in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, will still feature the cast of kid actors introduced as the young Losers Club to act out the adult characters’ memories. But those same memories will also haunt the adults in deep and unsettling ways that shape their lives in the present.

Said Muschietti:

On the second movie, that dialogue between timelines will be more present. If we’re telling the story of adults, we are going to have flashbacks that take us back to the ’80s and inform the story in the present day.

Muschietti also said that in his vision for the next film, the character of Mike Hanlon’s future is far darker and steeped in the supernatural than it is in King’s original novel. In this telling, Mike doesn’t just stay behind in Derry to keep watch over the town in case It returns; here, Mike devotes his life to learning all that he can about It and the obsession drives him to a dangerous addiction.

Muschietti added:

I want to make his character the one pivotal character who brings them all together, but staying in Derry took a toll with him. I want him to be a junkie actually. A librarian junkie. When the second movie starts, he’s a wreck.

He’s not just the collector of knowledge of what Pennywise has been doing in Derry. He will bear the role of trying to figure out how to defeat him. The only way he can do that is to take drugs and alter his mind.

As much fun as Muschietti’s It was, there was definitely more room for a deeper, more dreadful kind of fear that would have made Pennywise that much more terrifying. If Muschietti’s followup involves the dancing clown marinating the Losers by making them face their own demons, perhaps that means we can expect the next It to really leave us all floating.
