How much would you be willing to pay for the iPhone 8?
WhistleOut surveyed 1000 Aussies to work out an average price we’d think to be reasonable – and it falls just a bit (okay, a lot) short of the anticipated $1,500 price tag. $920, on average, is what we’d be happy to pay for the new model – $580 less than the expected retail price.
18-24 year olds are the age group willing to shell out the most – averaging $1,015 – and 45-54 year olds nominated the lowest ideal price at an average of $803.
The survey shows 49 per cent of people interested in the new iPhone would prefer to buy it outright, while 51 per cent would rather get it on a plan.
On a contract, $75 is the magic number for what we’d be willing to pay per month – as long as it comes with at least 10GB data. WhistleOut reckons it will be about $100-120 per month for an iPhone 8 plan, based on current iPhone pricing trends across Australia’s carriers.
35-44 year olds said they were are willing to pay $85 per month, while 18-24 year olds would be happy with $76 per month and those 55 and over settling at $68 per month.
“When Apple launched the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus two years ago, the entry level models cost $1,079 and $1,299 respectively, with higher storage models going for $1,379 and $1,529. Even 2014’s iPhone 6 still cost $929 for the basic model the following year,” says Joseph Hanlon, Publisher at WhistleOut, on where all these numbers are coming from.
“That pricing gives us a benchmark to work from and we can expect the touted price tag of $1,500 to be fairly accurate for the new device, so we’ll have to go out of our comfort zone if we want to get the new iPhone outright”
Of course, we’ll more on Wednesday morning when Apple announces all the details, including the price (we’ll be up bright and early covering the whole event), and then for sure when all the carriers announce their plans.
My money is on all those people complaining it costs too much buying it anyway, because let’s be real, that’s the way the world works these days.
