Sydney Airport Flights Grounded, Major Delays Expected

It’s the first day of the school holidays, and from 5:20am this morning until just a few moments ago all flights leaving Sydney Airport – Australia’s largest – were grounded. Some flights have started up again, but Airport officials have warned passengers should expect lengthy delays.

The cause of all this ruckus? Ground traffic control was hit with a power outage.

The outage has effected all domestic flights leaving Sydney – some boarded then sat on the tarmac, while others were outright cancelled.

Airservices Australia confirmed “technical issues” as the cause.

Virgin Australia confirmed in a statement “All flights at Sydney Airport are currently grounded until further notice due to an air traffic control issue. We are working to have all guests on their way as quickly and safely as possible once the issue is rectified. We will be contacting those guests who may be impacted but we encourage all guests to check the flight status page.”
