As Star Wars fans patiently wait for a new trailer to overanalyse, Last Jedi director Rian Johnson doled out a few Animal Planet-type facts about the film’s breakout stars, the porgs.

We already know the porgs are residents of Ahch-To, the mysterious planet where Rey finds Luke Skywalker. We’ve heard that “They build nests. They can fly,” and “Their babies are called porglets” from Lucasfilm’s Pablo Hidalgo. But what beyond that?
Yesterday on Twitter, a fan who was having a bad night asked Johnson for a bit more information on the animals and he happily obliged:
They are sea birds. Their coloring varies. Males are slightly larger than females. They can fly short distances. They’re inquisitive.

So let’s break this down.
- Porgs are sea birds
- Porg colouring varies
- Male porgs are slightly larger than female porgs
- Porgs can fly short distances
- Porgs are inquisitive
- Porgs build nests
- Baby porgs are called porglets
Those are the official facts. Unofficially, there are rumours that porgs are on Ahch-To for a reason. It’s the site of the first Jedi Temple, so it seems possible that they have some connection to that. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens December 14. Rumour has it that new trailer will be out sometime in October.
