Drew Barrymore Will Produce A Female-Centric Horror Anthology Show For The CW

You might not instantly associate Drew Barrymore with horror, but the Hollywood veteran has a solid association with the genre, going all the way back to Firestarter and up through Santa Clarita Diet. (And let’s not forget Scream.) So it makes sense that she’d be helping guide a new, female-focused horror series to the airwaves.

It’s called Black Rose Anthology, and as the name suggests, it will be an anthology series on the CW consisting of hour-long episodes, each written and directed by women. The other key name behind the camera (besides Barrymore’s producing partner Nancy Juvonen) is Jill Blotevogel, former co-showrunner on MTV’s Scream: The Series, who will pen the pilot.

Deadline reports that Black Rose Anthology “will explore some of humanity’s deepest fears from a woman’s unique perspective. Classic themes of terror will be tackled via vignettes about guilt, jealousy, repression, paranoia, insanity, sexual obsession and survival through a modern and distinctly feminine lens.”

The show — which sounds like it will be less slasher-y and more about psychological terror, which would actually be way more interesting and probably way scarier, too — is still “in development”, and there’s no word yet on who else might contribute to the series, or who might star in it.
