It’s just like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, only it costs a lot more money and, surprisingly, is even stickier than a river of chocolate.

An eBay auction for one of McDonald’s coveted cases of the now-discontinued Szechuan sauce has come to an end, with one lucky winner paying $US15,350 ($19,447) to take hold of a 1800g bottle of that sweet Mulan confection.
Even deadmau5 was a top runner in the bidding, but sadly it doesn’t look like he came out the winner — at least not yet. Writer Robert Workman, who owned the coveted sauce bottle, posted on Twitter that he’s still waiting to hear from the buyer, so it could still go to the next person in line.
McDonald’s chef Mike Haracz brought back 1998’s Szechuan sauce to celebrate Rick and Morty‘s third season. The company sent one bottle to Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland and gave out three more to fans who retweeted the company during the premiere. Workman (using his friend Dark_Falcon’s eBay account) chose to sell his case to “settle some bills and help out a couple of charities in the process.” As he wrote on eBay:
I hold McDonald’s and Chef Mike in the highest respect. I really do. Mike has done an amazing job bringing this back for some lucky people to enjoy and I will do everything in my power to assure that it’s in the hands of someone that will truly enjoy it with a party of people, instead of just letting it rot away on a shelf for all to see. The point of this sauce is for people to enjoy it — not necessarily me, but whoever ends up with it.
According to the product description, 10-per cent of proceeds are going to Extra Life and at least another 10-per cent will go to other charities like AbleGamers. We’ve reached out to Workman to clarify what charities he’s donating to.
For those who missed out on the deal, there are a couple others in the works. One winner is selling their now half-empty bottle — presumably because there’s only so much Szechuan awesomeness any one person can handle. And there’s another person selling a recreated Rick and Morty case that supposedly contains original Szechuan packets, but the seller notes that they could very well be filled with sand. Still, that auction is already at over $US14,000 ($17,737).
