Orlando Bloom Will Be A Fantasy Crime Detective With One Of The Most Ridiculous Names On Television

The long-in the works Carnival Row — which started out as a movie script 11 years before Amazon picked it up as a TV show — has found its star in the form of Orlando Bloom… whose character, I kid you not, has the most amazingly silly name: Rycroft Philostrate.

Showrun by Rene Echeverria, and with Pacific Rim‘s Travis Beacham (who wrote the original movie script the show is based on, A Killing in Carnival Row) and Guillermo Del Toro executively producing, Carnival Row is set in a fantastical version of 19th Century London, where faeries and other mystical creatures have fled to in the wake of a devastating war on their magical homelands. As tensions between the humans and the immigrant creatures mount, Bloom’s character Rycroft Philostrate, a police inspector, is charged with investigating the mysterious murder of a faerie showgirl on the titular Carnival Row.

I cannot express how much I love that name. It’s like the random name generator with the dial cranked all the way up to 11, way past “Benedict Cumberbatch” and into “megabritish”. [Ed. note: James would know.]

Carnival Row is set to film this spring, ahead of a 2019 debut on Amazon.
