Julianne Moore’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle Villain Is ‘Martha Stewart On Crack’

We’ve only had a brief glimpse of Julianne Moore’s new villain in the next Kingsman movie so far, but new details have emerged about the character that… well, make her sound pretty damn great and suitably ludicrous for a Kingsman big bad.

New information from both Empire and Entertainment Weekly this week has described Moore’s Poppy as an all-American sweetheart who runs her criminal empire out of a retro diner called Poppyland. According to director Matthew Vaughn, that means we’re going to be seeing Julianne Moore flitting between a sickly sweet, food loving matriarch and being a totally wild, sinister villain:

I thought it would be fun to see her play this kooky, sweet, Stepford Wives-style villain that, at the same time, is lethal and crazy and intelligent. Julianne is a fascinating actress. She can play wholesome so well, but also pretty crazy and tough. She was in my head as I was writing.

Poppy’s villainous plans will see her seek to legalise drugs all over the world, in order to make her smuggling racket a successful business venture. But, like Samuel L. Jackson’s Richmond Valentine from the first movie, some of what Poppy’s saying might actually sound a little reasonable, despite its villainy — if this little speech of hers Vaughn gave to EW is anything to go by, after dubbing the character with the esteemed comparison of “Martha Stewart on crack”:

Sugar is 10 times more addictive than cocaine. It causes more death and misery in America. Yet one is legal. Peddle that shit and you’re in the Forbes 500. Peddle coke and you’re in jail. What the fuck!

Now imagine Julianne Moore saying that while standing in a ’50s style diner, presumably about to either kick someone’s arse or engage in a bout of maniacal cackling. This movie’s gonna be great.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle hits theatres September 21.
