You Might Have To Wait An Extra Year For The Final Season Of Game Of Thrones

We might still be on the cusp of seeing Game of Thrones‘ penultimate, war-promising season, but we already have some news about the season after it. Mainly this: While war might be coming to Westeros once more, we might have to wait a little while longer to actually see it.

The news comes out of a new, far-ranging interview with HBO programming president Casey Bloys for Entertainment Weekly, covering everything from the spinoffs currently in development — four in total, of which Bloys pretty much only expects one to actually make it to TV, and also intriguingly only specifically referred to as “prequels” — to David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ future involvement with the franchise post-Thrones.

But while that’s all in a faraway future (don’t expect a GoT spinoff to air pretty much immediately after GoT ends, basically), the actual eighth season of Game of Thrones might be too. According to Bloys, Benioff and Weiss are now expected to spend the next year and a half working on the final, six-episode season, meaning that for now, HBO is unsure whether or not it will actually air in 2018 or 2019 yet:

So as of now, the final season could air in 2018 and/or in 2019 depending on their needs?

Yeah. They have to write the episodes and figure out the production schedule. We’ll have a better sense of that once they get further into the writing.

Winter might be coming, but unlike the poor inhabitants of Westeros, Game of Thrones‘ showrunners get to decide exactly when it arrives on our screens. Head on over to the link below to read much, much more from the interview.
