Dario Argento’s Italian horror classic Suspiria is beloved for many reasons, but high atop the list is the film’s haunting score by frequent Argento collaborators Goblin. A Suspiria remake is due later this year, and the crucial slot of soundtrack creator has just been announced. It’s a name you might recognise.
According to Variety, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke is on the job, taking on his first film-scoring gig — a side project no doubt influenced by the success of his bandmate Jonny Greenwood, who has become director Paul Thomas Anderson’s go-to composer (There Will Be Blood, The Master, Inherent Vice). Yorke has a huge task ahead of him; the music for the original Suspiria, which mixes eerie synth riffs with whispering and creaking vocals, is practically a character in the movie.
Suspiria remake director Luca Guadagnino said, “Our goal is to make a movie that will be a disturbing and transforming experience: for this ambition, we could not find a better partner than Thom.” The film, which stars Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton, has finished filming and is in post-production now. It’s due later this year.
