We Have Some Real Details About What’s Coming In Doctor Who’s Tenth Season

The tenth — and Peter Capaldi’s final — season of Doctor Who begins next weekend, and despite a couple of trailers and an introduction to the new companion, we don’t actually know all that much about it. Outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat is more than happy to oblige with a few new details however.

Speaking as part of a series of previews in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Moffat revealed the episode titles for the first 10 episodes of the season:

  • The Pilot — Steven Moffat
  • Smile — Frank Cottrell-Boyce
  • Thin Ice — Sarah Dollard
  • Knock Knock — Mike Bartlett
  • Oxygen — Jamie Mathieson
  • Extremis — Steven Moffat
  • The Pyramid at the End of the World — Peter Harness
  • The Lie of the Land — Toby Whithouse
  • The Empress of Mars — Mark Gatiss
  • The Eaters of Light — Rona Munro

But it wasn’t just relatively nondescript episode titles that Moffat had to offer. He also offered a few intriguing hints about several of the episodes, too:

  • Dollard’s episode apparently features a frozen River Thames in the early 19th Century, and apparently a giant snake monster responsible for the Thames’ serpentine journey throughout the English capital.
  • Cottrel-Boyce’s second episode features the smiling “emojibots” from the trailer, on a world where all the colonists have seemingly vanished — and where the Doctor and Bill have to keep a smile on their face to avoid certain death.
  • Mike Bartlett’s episode apparently is about the “terrible truth” behind the way floorboards creak, in that classic Doctor Who style of turning the ordinary into something monstrously terrifying.
  • Moffat is full of praise for Mathieson’s “Oxygen”, describing its core idea as “one of [his] favourite episodes ever”. No pressure, then!
  • “The Pyramid at the End of the World”, meanwhile, is actually about the end of the world, in a time period when all life on Earth has been wiped out.
  • Gatiss’ episode will feature “lots and lots” of Ice Warriors — a whole hive, apparently — as well as Victorian soldiers (as you do) and a new kind of Ice Warrior: The titular Empress, who’s been teased in several of the trailers for the show.

All that, plus the return of not one but two Masters, creepy classic Cybermen, and the impending doom of Peter Capaldi’s Doctor? Sounds like there’s a lot to look forward to for the next couple of months in Time and Space. Doctor Who returns in Australia this Sunday April 16 at 7:40PM on ABC, and on ABC iview earlier that day.
