Phone makers have always included some kind of teaser, discount or goodie bag as an incentive to pre-order their new handsets. As well as including a freebie $199 Gear VR virtual reality headset, Samsung's offering something particularly nifty: the chance to get your new $1200-plus phone a week earlier than everyone else.
Customers might start receiving their pre-ordered handsets as early as April 21, a full week ahead of the official April 28 launch date — also the date that you'll be able to walk into any retailer or Samsung's own outlets and pick up a Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+. While that's not a guarantee, Samsung is pretty confident:
Customers who pre-order the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in the first few days of the pre-order period could receive their bundle from April 21, making them among the first in the world to receive Samsung’s innovative new smartphone.
Here's why that's useful. If you're one of the plenty of folks out there that swap to a new phone and then sell their old one on eBay or Gumtree, that extra week gives you a head-start on your competition. That week could translate to an extra $50 or $100 in your pocket before loads of other second-hand handsets flood the market as they always do in the weeks following any big Samsung or Apple phone launch, and prices are driven down by the amount of supply.
So, don't bet the bank on getting your phone early, but it's as good a reason to pre-order as the free VR headset is — and very nearly as valuable. And it's first come first served, so if you want your S8 early, order soon.
