Video: We’ve been hearing about Pixar’s next movie for a while now, but this morning we finally got our first good look at Coco, the studio’s new movie about a boy, a magic guitar, and the Land of the Dead. And it looks very pretty.
Directed by Toy Story 3‘s Lee Unkrich, Coco follows Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez), a young boy entranced by the music of deceased guitar player Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt). But when Miguel breaks into de la Cruz’s tomb to see the legendary guitar, he finds himself inadvertently transported to the Land of the Dead — and has to find a way out if he wants to return to his family in the realm of the living.
Aside from the frankly stunning visuals, it’s interesting to see where Coco goes in its discussion of Mexican culture and the Day of the Dead — and to see what influence Lalo Alcaraz, one of Disney’s harshest critics, had on the film. For now, we just have a gorgeous trailer to look at.
Coco is set to hit theatres December 26.
