Just the fact that it’s one of three projects tackling the same idea already suggests a problem. But there are a lot more warning signs that maybe, maybe, this isn’t the best project for Sam Raimi to be tackling.
Will this Bermuda Triangle story have Nazis, time travel and Scully? No? I’m out. (Image: X-Files, “Triangle,” Fox)
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Raimi is in talks to direct a mystery thriller set in the Bermuda Triangle. No, it isn’t the Bermuda Triangle project from Universal. And no, not the one from Warner Bros either. This is the Skydance one. What sets it apart? No way to know, since everyone’s trying to keep their super-special Bermuda Triangle plots a secret.
Skydance’s movie has a script from Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard, the duo behind — wait for it — The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Yeah. Think about that and then think about Raimi’s last movie, Oz The Great and Powerful. And then consider that this movie’s been kicking around Skydance for years and, back in 2013, Skydance wanted Johnny Depp to star.
I’m not “sceptical” about this film being good as much as I am impressed by how every decision is so the opposite of great that I’d totally believe Skydance was pulling a Springtime for Hitler on it.
