Video: Of all the things we’ve seen from this film, it has been a constant frustration to me, personally, that we hadn’t yet been treated to what I was certain would be the highlight of this film: Josh Gad, as LeFou, singing “Gaston”. And now it’s finally here.
Not only is it here, it also has the new lyrics we were promised. Alan Menken mentioned a while back that Howard Ashman, the original lyricist who passed away in 1991, had written lyrics they’d cut because they were “risqué in terms of sensibility”. Bill Condon, the director of the live-action film, begged to put a few back in.
Right after “You can ask any Tom, Dick or Stanley, and they will tell you whose team they prefer to be on,” instead of “No one’s been like Gaston, a king pin like Gaston,” this version has “Who plays cards like Gaston, who breaks hearts like Gaston, who’s much more than the sum of his parts like Gaston!”
Take a look and marvel at Josh Gad’s attempt to chew all the scenery. In the best possible way.
Beauty and the Beast comes out on March 23.
