For the last few years, Samsung has taken the limelight at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to announce its new Galaxy S flagship phone.
But this year, you’ll be waiting a little while longer.
Everything We Think We Know About The Samsung Galaxy S8
A Reuters report quotes Samsung mobile boss DJ Koh as saying that the smartphone giant won’t be launching its next Galaxy at MWC in late February.
Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve heard from a few different sources that the Galaxy S8 and its larger S8 Plus variant won’t be announced or even previewed at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, but will instead be introduced to the world at a separate event in the second half of March, with an on-sale date in Australia in the first half of April.
This most recent report from Reuters suggests that’s the case.
We can also make a couple of inferences from Samsung’s delayed introduction of the S8; firstly, it doesn’t want to be seen as sticking to its existing (self-imposed) schedule of smartphone releases, the constantly decreasing cycle of which may have contributed to the Galaxy Note7’s battery production issues. Secondly, it doesn’t want to share digital air-time with all of the other smartphone brands that are set to introduce their flagship phones at MWC, like Huawei and LG.
The Galaxy S8 is widely rumoured to be built around all-screen body, fitting significantly larger displays into bodies themselves only slightly larger than their predecessors, the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.
