Say hello to the latest live action Marvel heroes: Up-and-coming actors Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt have been cast in the title roles for Freeform's long-in-gestation Cloak and Dagger series.
Deadline is reporting, with confirmation from ABC and Marvel, that Joseph and Holt will headline the new show — which has already been ordered straight-to-series at Freeform — as Tyrone Johnson and Tandy Bowen respectively.
In the comics, Tyrone and Tandy are young mutates who gained their powers as runaways when they were force-fed a sinister designer drug, turning Tyrone into the intangible, shadowy hero known as Cloak, and Tandy into the light-dagger-flinging hero known as, you guessed it, Dagger. While the two are superheroes, it seems like the Cloak and Dagger show will focus more intimately on Tandy and Tyrone's romantic relationship together, forged by their shared heroic origins. Here's two official descriptions for the heroes released through Deadline:
Tandy (Oliva Holt — "Dagger") Once a privileged little girl, Tandy Bowen watched as her family was destroyed by a disastrous storm that uprooted her life. Now in her late teens, an unexpected encounter with a boy named Tyrone sparks a life changing event.
Tyrone (Aubrey Joesph — "Cloak") Young Tyrone Johnson wanted nothing more than to prove he was fearless. But when everything he held close was taken away, life taught Tyrone to be afraid. Now older and more sheltered, Tyrone closes himself off. But when he meets a girl named Tandy his life changes forever.
Although it's now bolstered by the incredible branding power that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Cloak and Dagger has actually been in the works at ABC for around five years, so to see it finally get off the ground — and find its heroes — is a welcome sight. We'll let you know more on the Cloak and Dagger show as we learn it.
