If you’re buying a new iPhone, you should probably factor the extra cost of Apple’s optional device insurance, AppleCare+. For a one-off fee, AppleCare+ will cover the cost of a couple of repairs or replacements from accidental damage. With the launch of the iPhone 7, though, Apple has changed the pricing of AppleCare+ in Australia — making it cheaper to replace a smashed screen but more expensive to fix anything else.
Previously, AppleCare+ cost $129 in Australia for the iPhone SE, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus and earlier models, and $189 for the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Now, you’ll pay $129 for the iPhone SE and $189 for the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus — no AppleCare+ is available for older devices like the 6 and 6 Plus.
As part of AppleCare+, customers with the service are eligible for up to two repairs or replacements for their covered device within the two year period at a subsidised cost. Previously, a flat rate of $99 was charged no matter the hardware issue on an iPhone 6 or older, and $149 on iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Now, you’ll pay $45 per incident for screen damage and $149 for any other accidental damage.
Battery replacements are covered under AppleCare+ as before, and are similarly covered by statuory warranty and Australian Consumer Law. Customers can buy AppleCare+ when they pick up a new iPhone, or within 60 days of their iPhone purchase, with proof of purchase required. [Apple]
