The Women Of NASA Take The Spotlight In The First Trailer For Hidden Figures

Video: The stories of NASA’s formative years and the early days of the space program have been chronicled time and time again, but Theodore Melfi’s Hidden Figures is telling one we’ve not seen before about the African American women who helped send rockets to the stars. It’s looking great so far.

Based on Margot Lee Shetterly’s upcoming non-fiction book Hidden Figures: The Story of the African-American Women Who Helped Win the Space Race, the movie follows the story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae), the female scientists crucial to NASA’s early work on Project Mercury and the 1969 moon landing.

We’ve been looking forward to this movie for quite some time, and the first trailer does a lot to stoke our excitement even further — especially because of its surprising amount of humour amidst the serious backdrop of how women and African-Americans were treated in the ’60s. This looks full of style, fun and insight into the earliest days of the space industry. Hidden Figures is due to hit theatres in January 2017.
