Kimmy Schmidt Producer Developing Horror Comedy Show About Exorcism

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a show that has tackled some serious subjects, such as cult indoctrination and assault, so maybe the same could be said for another bleak subject matter. Maybe next time they should go for something like… exorcism?

According to Variety, the co-executive producer on the Netflix series, Allison Silverman, has created a horror comedy called Amy Damnation for Fox along with Jon Krisel, who serves as showrunner on FX’s Baskets.

Even sillier is the description for Amy Damnation, which sounds like a quirky, buddy sitcom more than a tale of supernatural dread. According to Variety:

The story centres around the titular Amy, a compulsive people-pleaser and all-around doormat who discovers she was once such a headstrong kid that her parents had her exorcised. She sets out to find the demon who possessed her, convinced that only he can give her the power to take back her life.

So it’s like a road trip movie where somebody is hellbent (pun intended) on finding themselves and knows that only one person can help, except in this case, the saviour is a demon.

If this sounds familiar to you, you’re not far off. Fox already has an exorcism TV show — The Exorcist, which apparently is pretty scary and is set to debut this spring. If it picks up the comedy, it could potentially have the first block of programming dedicated to exorcisms on a major network.

Personally, I’m not too fond of the idea of an exorcism played for laughs, especially considering how many people have died or have nearly died from them. But Kimmy Schmidt never shied away from tackling taboo subjects, so why stop now?
