Experience One Of The Darkest Places On The US Coast In This Timelapse

Video: Dry Tortugas National Park is one of the darkest places on the east coast of the United States. So if you’re going to make a timelapse video of the night sky, that’s an ideal place to do so.

Located around 110km west of Key West, this set of islands is home to a fort that was used as a prison during the US Civil War, but has served as a National Park since 1992. It’s incredibly remote — only accessible via boat or seaplane — but visitors at night can check out the night sky, which is mostly untouched by light pollution.

According to the SKYGLOW Project, night photography isn’t allowed in the park to protect dark skies from artificial light (light pollution), but the group was able to get an exception for their video. The SKYGLOW project travels to areas with incredible nighttime views and films them in an effort to preserve dark skies.

That way you can remember what the Milky Way looks like.
