The Moto Z Force Droid Edition and Moto Z Droid Edition have just been announced, and the most distinctive feature is the snap-on Moto Mods.
Attaching magnetically, there's already a battery pack, a speaker and a projector in the range -- so far.
First up, let's talk about the new phones on offer. Running on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow the Moto Z Force Droid Edition features the second generation of Moto ShatterShield (the world's first shatterproof smartphone display),narrower edges and a thinner design. It's also designed with a water-repellent coating.
The 3500 mAh battery life is pushing two days' worth, and a "TurboPower" charger can give you 15 hours more in just 15 minutes.
It comes with a 21MP rear-facing camera featuring optical image stabilisation and laser autofocus. There's also a 5MP front-facing camera, extra front flash and a wide-angle lens to get everyone in the shot, and two years free Google Photos storage.
There's a fingerprint reader, 1080p (60 fps) or 4K (30 fps) video and playback, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB memory and voice commands.
Moto Display and Moto Actions are some of the more "innovative" features -- you know, the ones that end up in the "I never use this but it's cool" category). You can wave at the screen to see your notifications and play or pause music, twist your wrist to open the camera, chop downwards twice to bring up the torch. Putting your phone face down activates do not disturb mode.
You can find the full specs here.
The Moto Z Droid Edition is the "lite" edition, coming in a few millimeters smaller, 27 grams lighter and featuring Corning Gorilla Glass in place of the Shattershield technology.
It's got a 13MP camera, a 2600 mAh battery, and is otherwise identical to the Force, specs-wise.
Attached via "really strong" integrated magnets, the mods available now are designed to be compatible with future Moto models. Once snapped on, the phone automatically detects the new addition, prompting you to connect it.
The JBL Soundboost Speaker gives your smartphone a stereo boost. It also features a kickstand, built in 1000 mAh battery with 10 hours battery life and is speakerphone compatible.
Weighing 145 g there are two 27mm diameter speakers with 6W power in total. You're looking at a frequency response range of 200 Hz—20 kHz, and loudness at 80dBSPL.
The Moto Insta-Share Projector projects up to 70 inches in a 16:9 aspect ratio on any flat surface, and with an an integrated kickstand you can easily project at any angle. Plus, it includes up to one hour of battery life so you can project longer without using your phone's battery.
Using DLP projector technology, the 854x480 WVGA (480p) resolution Insta-Share has a brightness of 50 lumens, a contrast ratio of 400:1 and a throw ratio of 1.2. The lamp life is rated at 10,000 hours.
The Incipio OffGrid Power Pack has a 2220 mAh battery, giving you up to 22 additional hours of battery life whenever you need it. Plus, its smart Efficiency Mode can give you up to 20 per cent more battery life by automatically charging your phone when efficiency is at its peak.
It also comes with a wireless charging option, and designer editions by Kate Spade and TUMI.
Then there are the straight up styling options with the Moto Style Shell. The shell is streamlined, designed for comfort, and snaps easily onto your phone without adding bulk.
You can choose from premium materials like real wood and leather, or pick out a patterned fabric.
