The New Moto Z Smartphone Has Snap-On Modules

The Moto Z Force Droid Edition and Moto Z Droid Edition have just been announced, and the most distinctive feature is the snap-on Moto Mods.

Attaching magnetically, there’s already a battery pack, a speaker and a projector in the range — so far.

The Phones

First up, let’s talk about the new phones on offer. Running on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow the Moto Z Force Droid Edition features the second generation of Moto ShatterShield (the world’s first shatterproof smartphone display),narrower edges and a thinner design. It’s also designed with a water-repellent coating.

The 3500 mAh battery life is pushing two days’ worth, and a “TurboPower” charger can give you 15 hours more in just 15 minutes.

It comes with a 21MP rear-facing camera featuring optical image stabilisation and laser autofocus. There’s also a 5MP front-facing camera, extra front flash and a wide-angle lens to get everyone in the shot, and two years free Google Photos storage.

There’s a fingerprint reader, 1080p (60 fps) or 4K (30 fps) video and playback, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB memory and voice commands.

Moto Display and Moto Actions are some of the more “innovative” features — you know, the ones that end up in the “I never use this but it’s cool” category). You can wave at the screen to see your notifications and play or pause music, twist your wrist to open the camera, chop downwards twice to bring up the torch. Putting your phone face down activates do not disturb mode.

You can find the full specs here.

The Moto Z Droid Edition is the “lite” edition, coming in a few millimeters smaller, 27 grams lighter and featuring Corning Gorilla Glass in place of the Shattershield technology.

It’s got a 13MP camera, a 2600 mAh battery, and is otherwise identical to the Force, specs-wise.

The Mods

Attached via “really strong” integrated magnets, the mods available now are designed to be compatible with future Moto models. Once snapped on, the phone automatically detects the new addition, prompting you to connect it.
