If you’ve seen both Captain America: Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, then you know that the first one sets up a possible relationship between Agent 13 (Emily VanCamp) and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), and the other just throws that relationship together out of nowhere. Well, Hayley Atwell has weighed in.

Of all the weird things from the comics to keep, the Marvel cinematic universe has decided that Captain America’s modern day love interest, Sharon, is the niece of his 1940s love interest, Peggy (Atwell). It’s weird and creepy and was not something the films needed to have, especially since Steve is a bit aloof in Winter Soldier. But suddenly in Civil War he kisses Sharon, shortly after a) Peggy dies and b) he discovers Sharon and Peggy are related. Not cool, Steve.
At Dallas Comic Con Fan Expo, Hayley Atwell joked about what Peggy would think of all this, and it’s dead on-point:
Well, first of all she’d be turning over in her grave. She’d be like “no.” And she’d inject herself with the blue serum and become a super villain. She’d break out of her coffin and ground [Sharon]. She’d ground her. Then she’d kick Steve’s arse as well.”
I just feel that, you know – I wouldn’t want to date my great aunt’s guy. It just feels like it crosses an incestuous boundary. And Peggy just died. That’s even more disrespectful, right? It’s like, “don’t touch that.” You can’t tap that!
Atwell even made a very timely reference to the current comics version of Steve, adding, “She’d want the best for her and she’d want her dating a good guy. And now with this whole ‘Hail Hydra’ business, I don’t know if Steve’s good enough for her.”
Really, Atwell’s final word on this whole thing is the only thing that’s needed: “So on all levels, it’s just a big fat no.”
