Image Cache: Every year, the Sony World Photography Awards round up the best amateur and professional photographs from across the globe. This year, some of the winners look like they could have been taken on another planet altogether.

The winners have been chosen from a total of 230,103 images submitted from over 180 countries. Here are some of our favourites.
Above is the winner of the professional landscape category. The image shows a dust-baked rhino in Namibia, blurring into its barren surroundings. The picture was taken by Maroesjka Lavigne of Belgium.

This might look like Mars, but it was actually captured here on Earth by Julien Mauve. It won the professional conceptual category.

These disembodied heads were shot by Alexandre Meneghini from Brazil in the sea just off the coast of Havana. The image won the Open People Award.

It looks like the start of a fantasy film, but this shot actually shows Luciola parvula fireflies swarming through the woods on the mountains of Shikoku Island at the beginning of the rainy season. It bagged Kei Nomiyama the prize for the single best image in the Open category.

This is Mohsen Mortazavi from Tehran. In 2012, he was mistakenly blamed for a prank phone call and subsequently attacked with three litres of sulphuric acid. This images is one a set by Asghar Khamseh documenting such attacks. He submission took the overall prize in the awards.
