Microsoft Has A New Surface Type Cover (With Fingerprint ID) For Australia

A new version of Microsoft's Surface Pro 4 Type Cover will be available in Australia from 15 March, and is open to pre-orders from today. It's nearly identical to the previous version, but includes a fingerprint reader to add some sign-in security to older Surface machines like the previous Surface Pro 3.

The newly released Surface Pro 4 Type Cover features a "redesigned" mechanical keyboard, a larger glass trackpad, and is compatible with both Surface Pro 4 and Surface Pro 3 -- allowing Pro 3 users access to Windows 10's Hello personalised sign-in capability through the new fingerprint reader.

Here's a quick overview of Windows Hello:

It's super expensive, though -- retailing at $249.95, it will be available from JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and commercial resellers. If you can't wait, you can pre-order from today on the Microsoft store.

Man I'd love a Surface 4 but I cbf selling a kidney or my firstborn to afford one...

I've had one of these for a few months now, shipped from the US last year, and I'm still not convinced that the fingerprint scanner is worth it. When it works it's fast & easy, and it still works while the keyboard is folded back which is awesome. But a number of times every day the scanner doesn't work when waking my SP3 from sleep and I can't get it working to authorise store purchases (I'm prompted to use it but scanning my finger just gives an error). I don't have any apps that can use it either.

The SP4 style keyboard is definitely worth the upgrade over the SP3 style though.

I don't know if it's a similar issue given the complexity of Kinect, but when unlocking my computer via Windows Hello with Kinect it takes a little bit to boot the Kinect up from sleep if my computer was hibernating.
