HBO Desperately Wants To Stop Game Of Thrones Season Six Leaking

HBO Desperately Wants to Stop Game of Thrones Season Six Leaking

Game of Thrones, leaks, and online piracy in general have a... tumultuous relationship. Not only is the show regularly the most pirated TV show on the internet, last year, nearly half of the show's fifth season leaked before its broadcast. It's no surprise HBO is taking some major precautions to avoid this problem for season six. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo confirmed that, for the first time in the show's history, press screeners (the advance copies released to the media so they can review each episode in a timely manner) will not be sent out for review.

It's a huge change, but also an understandable one; after all, last year's humongous leak came from HBO's press screeners making their way out into the wild. Additionally, season six itself has a lot of content that HBO no doubt wants to try and keep as much of a lid on as they can, especially all the hubbub surrounding the will-he/won't-he return of Jon Snow to the show. But even with this extra secrecy, a lot of details and plot elements have gotten out there already.

Since its debut, Game of Thrones has sat at the heart of the debate on whether or not piracy ultimately harms or helps a TV show -- but even if there were any tangible benefits to the series' seedy reputation in piracy circles, it seems like HBO is just going to keep clamping down harder and harder on it.

When it was announced, I tried to subscribe to hbo now. They have a great catalogue of exclusives and I was more than happy to pay for it.

But they wouldn't have a bar of it.

So now we're in this situation.

They need to protect themselves. I'm more than happy to wait for it to come out to watch the new season. As one should be.

It's not like this show needs advanced reviews of the episodes for people to be convinced to watch it... Didn't even need it last year and look what happened.

They should film a fake episode one to leak where everyone is killed by pirates........

Oh my god, I sooooo wish they would do something like that! Or a parody of all the crazier myths and theories. But I guess I'm just a sucker for anything GoT. Heck, I only discovered the other day the whole "History of westeros" series on youtube, then promptly ended up sitting down and watching the full 5 eps (1hr each) in a single sitting.

(For anyone else who didn't realize it existed, it's voiced by the cast and shown over drawn images, and basically covers all the things that just get glossed over in the show like why the faces are on the trees - Here's a link to the first part of 5. Just note that the sound cuts out on that from 1:30 to 2:44. If anyone is really dying to know what was in that missing minute, here's a vid showing the specific missing part:

Release individual Press Screeners with fake bits, to identify the leakers.

"....and remember, the Queen mustn't know."

Don't even need to have fake bits. They could have off color pixels in certain parts of the shot, like a water mark and find them from that.
