The constructor is basically the automobile maker of the vehicle (think Ferrari and Mercedes and so on) and the winner is determined "by adding points scored in each race by any driver for that constructor". The drivers drive and control the thing but the F1 cars are powerful beasts that are carefully constructed to exact specifications. Without one, there isn't the other.
