LG Is Bringing Magic Televisions To CES

January’s CES will see LG show off its new Smart TV range, starring the latest 3.0 update to its webOS platform with its “magic” features.

“We are excited about webOS 3.0, a major update since this TV platform technology was first introduced in 2014,” said Brian Kwon, President and CEO at LG’s Home Entertainment Company.

“The webOS story of Simple Connection, Simple Switching and Simple Discovery has connected with customers, from what we’ve seen. In addition, the platform illustrates our commitment to securing a leadership role in the smart TV market through innovation and creativity.”

webOS 3.0 is bringing some interesting new functionality to the platform — namely the Magic suite.

Magic Zoom allows you to magnify objects and letters, while Magic Mobile Connection allows users to connect a compatible smartphone to their LG SMART TV via the LG TV Plus App to access mobile apps on the TV screen.

The existing Magic Remote has been given an upgrade, with extra buttons for controlling set-top boxes. The Screen Remote feature promises to be less cluttered and easier to use.

Non-“magic” LG webOS 3.0 features include letting you know upcoming time slots for your favourite shows, using the speakers to play music when the TV is off and on-screen control of compatible smart home appliances from LG.

If Elvis really is still alive somewhere, he’d be happy about this one — webOS now offers the ability to watch two different channels (or a Blu-ray and a channel) at the same time, on the same screen.

Details on specs, pricing and availability are still to come.
