Video: In September, Huntington Ingalls Industries’ shipbuilding division launched the US Coast Guard’s newest National Security Cutter (NSC), Munro (WMSL 755). The time lapse video below shows the workers painstakingly transporting and putting onto water their sleek and elegant new ship.
The 127m long, 4,500-tonne cutter was moved to the floating dry dock with the help of a rail car system one week prior to launch. Then the dock and the ship were pushed away from the pier and flooded to float the ship, which came off the dock with the assistance of tugs.
When completed and delivered by the end of 2016, USCGC Munro will be the sixth Legend-class cutter of the United States Coast Guard. Ingalls has delivered five NSCs — the flagships of the Coast Guard’s cutter fleet — so far. There are three more under construction, including Munro. The seventh ship, Kimball (WMSL 756), is scheduled for delivery in 2018.
