Tim Cook’s $US700,000 Security Spending Is Small Compared To Other Major CEOs

The Apple nerd community is buzzing about how much the company pays for Tim Cook’s security. $US700,000 to protect just one guy! The thing no one seems to be mentioning? Other tech companies spend a lot more on CEO security.

If we compare the amount Apple spends on Cook’s security to what companies like Oracle or Amazon spend, that $US700,000 price tag looks downright humble. Or at the very least, perfectly in line with the industry.

According to Fortune magazine’s analysis of SEC filings for 2014, some of the biggest companies in America shelled out north of a million bucks to protect their CEOs:

  • $US1.6 million for Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos
  • $US1.5 million for (former) Oracle CEO Larry Ellison
  • $US584,075 for Disney CEO Bob Iger
  • $US385,606 for Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffet
  • $US320,428 for FedEX CEO Fred Smith

So yeah, Cook’s security detail spending doesn’t look so over the top. But it does remind us that rich and famous people spend a lot of money to keep peasants like us away from them.
