Working out at a gym, with nothing but TV news or your more physically fit peers to stare at, can be a bit disheartening. But don’t despair: The future where technology allows you to stand over a volcano or fly to Mars while flexing your gluts in the confines of your basement isn’t far off.

Enter the “Icaros” home gym, a concept created by the German company HYVE which uses smartphone accelerometers to send user data into an animated virtual world. Admittedly, doing squats while wearing a clunky VR headset sounds less than ideal.

But positioned horizontally on an exercise machine that looks like some sort of zero-g training system, maybe you don’t notice it so much. Anyway, there’s no question that VR systems will become smaller and better in the future, and when that happens, an explosion of VR-ready exercise machines is sure to follow.

Courtesy of HYVE, here are a few sneak peeks at the device that may one day ensure you never have to drag your out of shape self into a public venue to burn kilojoules again.
