Panasonic G7: The GH4’s New Kid Brother Can Still Shoot 4K Video

While Fujilm announced a shrunk-down version of its top-end mirrorless camera today, Panasonic is doing the exact same thing. The G7 has many of the features that enthusiasts love about last year’s GH4, including the power of 4K video recording.

While previous models in Panasonic’s G line have been rather bland, the G7 has updated design with a rather striking angular body and beefy knurled dials for manual control. It features a similar 16 megapixel micro four-thirds sensor to every other recent Panasonic camera, like the GH4. It’s also got the same speedy quad-core processor as the GH4, allowing high res 4K video recording. The price is $US800 for the body, that’s over half the price of the GH4, which currently goes for around $US1700!

The G7 should perform admirably in other areas like autofocus. You guessed it, it borrows the same system of the GH4. Panasonic is also trying its best to hype its 4K Photo feature, which lets you record video and pull high-res stills from the clips, so you can capture very specific moments with ease, like a fleeting smile. It’s a cool feature, but one that is not new to the G7, and also quite hard to explain to newbies.

Overall, the G7 looks like a great option for video shooters. Its small size and price put it in a great position for people wanting great video and stills without the weight. Not many other mirrorless cameras can do both really well. Look for the G6 to ship in June for $US800.
