Last year, we got the chance to try playing a video game with an avatar of ourselves, thanks to a camera system which creates a complete 3D model of your person. Since most of us don’t have 90 spare cameras and a supercomputer lying around, it’s a hard-to-repeat experience. That’s why designer Alexx Henry is taking his rig on tour.
Henry’s system uses 90 Nikon cameras to create an insanely detailed 3D model of a person, before feeding those images into a PC and crunching the numbers to create a digital avatar, capable of running, jumping, and probably pulling off some crazy stuff no-one with breakable bones would ever attempt.
What can you do with a high-resolution 3D scan of yourself, I hear you ask? Well, aside from running around in the aforementioned video game, xxArray is also offering a bunch of physical versions of yourself. These range from a simple 3D-printed sculpture, or a 30CM high sandstone likeness of your head, in case you aspire to rule a Middle East dictatorship any time in the near future.
If you want to get in on the action, you’ll need to be in one of the cities on the North American tour, which is taking place September-November this year. Prices start at $US99 for the basic capture experience, with access to your personal video game costing $US80, and the 3D printed sculptures hundreds more. [Kickstarter]
