Huge Lack Of Local Support For The Nexus Player’s Australian Launch

It’s all good and well Google’s Nexus Player is arriving in Australia very shortly, but one has to wonder what you’ll actually be able to use it for? Fortunately, Ausdroid’s Daniel Tyson has done some digging and discovered the answer is somewhat hit and miss.

I don’t think anyone will be particularly flabbergasted by the fact that of all the serious providers, only Netflix is prepared, though it admittedly had a healthy head start. According to Tyson, none of the major channels — Seven, Nine, Ten the ABC and SBS — have apps for the Nexus Player.

While SBS On Demand, TenPlay and 9Jumpin are being considered for the device, the ABC and PLUS7 have “no plans” for support, at least for the time being. QuickFlix, Foxtel and Stan are all behind the eight-ball as well, though you could argue it’s more likely these services will find their way onto the Nexus Player. For now, you’re out of luck.

It’s not all bad news, however. As Tyson points out, you won’t be short of content to watch or play — a listing of compatible apps can be easily found on Google Play and if the device proves popular here, local providers won’t want to stay on the sidelines for long.
