This Giant Rolling, Walking Bike Can Probably Tackle Any Terrain

This Giant Rolling, Walking Bike Can Probably Tackle Any Terrain

If you want to take your bicycle off-road, you need larger and larger tyres, depending on how rough the terrain gets — and that makes it harder and harder to pedal. But maybe Ron Schroer has found the perfect off-road cycling alternative with his Boneshaker Big Wheel that rolls and walks all at the same time.

The front of the Big Wheel is all bike — or all penny-farthing, to be precise — with a giant wheel that won’t get stuck in small crevices. But instead of a matching wheel at the back you’ll find a series of walking legs inspired by
Theo Jansen’s Strandbeests that can tip-toe over most obstacles.

There’s a lot of working parts to maintain, and maybe wood wasn’t the best choice for an off-road ride. But if the Boneshaker Big Wheel breaks down and leaves you stranded in the woods, at least you have plenty of fuel for a fire. [Vimeo via The Awesomer]
