The District 9 director’s concept art for Alien captures the right spirit, but would he make the right film?
The story of Alien is one of diminishing returns. Effectively, it all went downhill from Alien 3, and has never really returned there, and I’m aware that’s an opinion that some would hold was true all the way back to Aliens.

That’s why concept art from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp is both exciting and somewhat depressing. Revealed over the weekend, the individual pieces look stunning, but they are, as per an unverified Twitter account, only concept art for something Blomkamp was working on privately, rather than an official set of storyboards or anything of the type.
They’re undeniably very cool, but at the same time rather solidly backwards looking. I like Ripley and Hicks as much as the next sci-fi fanatic, but it’s arguably time to move on from those characters and do something else. If it can look as good as this, though, I’m in.
