While I personally prefer an auto-lock that doesn’t connect to the Internet and expose my home network to the antics of script kiddies, in today’s connected home that’s isn’t always a viable option. Luckily, August’s new Smart Lock hardware lets you have it both ways.
The San Francisco-based home security company announced the upcoming release of its new August Connect hardware. It’s essentially a wireless device hub that provides your Smart Lock with a 24/7 Internet connection. It plugs into any standard power outlet and connects to your home network wirelessly. With it activated you can “buzz in” guests through your existing Smart Lock app from anywhere you have an Internet connection. This way you don’t have to be physically present to use the BT connection nor does your guest need to download the app to receive a temporary key.
Plus, the Internet connection also allows the Smart Lock to be integrated with any home automation service that will support its API. Reportedly Logitech Harmony, SmartThings, and Nest (whose thermostat will automatically adjust when it senses you enter or leave the property) have all signed on to support the August lock.
The Connect is currently available for $US50 pre-order at August, Amazon and Apple stores. It is expected to ship by mid-February.
