This Is What It’s Like To Drive A Car From A Drone’s Point Of View

Imagine driving a car from a third-person point of view, as seen by a drone hovering in the sky. It sounds fun but dangerous, like a computer game made real — which is why Tom Scott decided to try it out in real life.

Equipped with a filming drone, some video goggles, a Mazda MX-5 and a disused airfield, Tom got his friends Paul and Oli to drive around a relatively complex course to see how easy it is to drive using just images filmed by a drone. Those goggles mean the guys can see nothing but the real-time footage from the trailing hexacopter. Spoiler: it wasn’t that easy.

Referring to the footage as something akin to the screen of a Game Boy — which means subtle details are easy to miss — both drivers seem to find the whole process both exhilarating and terrifying. But, oh, it’s so much fun to watch. [YouTube]
