Watch films on your TV instead of your tablet? It might cost you — at least that’s if Jeffrey Katzenberg, the CEO of DreamWorks Animation, is right about a future where films are priced according to screen size.
Speaking out about his vision of the future of movie consumption, he explained that “a movie screen will be $15. A 75-inch TV will be $4. A smartphone will be $1.99.” Over the next decade, he reckons, pay-per-inch viewing will become the pricing model of choice.
Obviously, such a shift would require no small amount of technical investment to lock down content — otherwise, what would be to stop you from AirPlaying or Miracasting a movie from your phone to your TV? That might not be as simple or straightforward as it first sounds, and also smacks of some of the DRM issues that many prickle at.
