The new HTC One is here , folks! Last year’s model was one of the best Android phones you could lay hands on, but the smartphone world never rests. How does HTC’s big aluminium prizefighter stack up to the competition? We’ve charted all the most important specs and features for you below.
As far as guts go, the new HTC One is pretty evenly matched with the competition. A quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 with 2GB of RAM out-muscles the Moto X but doesn’t quite stack up to the Galaxy S5. Likewise One’s (still big) 2600 mAh Li-Po battery doesn’t quite measure up to the Galaxy S5’s powerhouse, but stands taller than the Moto, Nexus and Lumia, and significantly overshadows the iPhone 5S.
A 5-inch, 1080p screen comes in just a smidge smaller than the Galaxy S5’s 5.1-incher, but with equal resolution. The new HTC Duo camera ditches optical image stabilisation for tricky software-based anti-shake, though the same 4MP rear camera makes another appearance. But we’ll see whether HTC’s UltraPixels will make up for the phone’s mid-shelf megapixel spec, especially compared to the Lumia’s 20MP shooter.
A big screen and a big battery make for a big phone. At 5.76 x 2.78 inches it’s a wee bit taller but narrower than the S5, and at 0.37 inches thick, it’s a little chunkier than both the Nexus 5 and the Galaxy S5. The One weighs in at a hefty 5.64 ounces that will weigh down your pocket more than any other phone on this list save for the burly Lumia Icon.
Numbers, of course, don’t tell the whole story. Hardware is nothing without smart software at the helm, and Android 4.4 with HTC’s relatively unoffensive Sense 6.0 skin could make a good combo. This aluminium-bodied beauty seems to run with the pack as far as specs go — we can’t wait to see how it does in the real world.
