A Tandem Bike That Shrinks To Accommodate A Single Rider

A Tandem Bike That Shrinks To Accommodate A Single Rider

A tandem bike can make for a romantic outing for a couple in love, but when there’s just a single passenger it makes for a challenging ride. So California-based Calfee Design built a pair of custom tandem bikes that can actually be transformed into single passenger cycles with just a few simple tools.

Of course, it’s not like you can just hit a button on the handlebars and the rear section of the tandem bike will jettison itself free. But thanks to a couple of strategically engineered coupling points, removing the second passenger’s frame and replacing it with a shorter structure for a single rider is relatively painless.

Painless when it comes to the labour, at least — not so much when it comes to the carbon fibre creation’s $25,000 price tag. [Calfee Design via Gizmag]
