Rumour: Microsoft Is Building An Xbox Reader App

Clearly, the future is (possibly) all about reading. A new Microsoft job listing suggests that the company is looking to build “a groundbreaking interactive reading app on Windows, which incorporates books, magazines, and comics.”

The ad describes a position in the Xbox Music, Video, and Reading (MVR) team, which would help put together the reading app for use on Windows 8, and perhaps other platforms. That would complement the existing built-in Xbox branded Music and Video apps for Windows 8. The OS already ships with a very basic reader — which handles PDF, XPS, and TIFF files — but clearly this is designed to be something more than that.

It’s not clear what form it might take, or which platforms it might end up on — Windows Phone? Xbox itself? — but it could link in somehow with Microsoft’s investment in Nook. Way back in 2012, Microsoft invested $US300 million in Barnes & Noble’s reading hardware division, but we’re yet to see anything come of it. Maybe, possibly, perhaps the time is now.
