Why NVIDIA Hasn’t Released The Shield Globally Yet

When we sat down with the head of NVIDIA, Jen-Hsun Huang, at CES we only had one question on our mind: when will Australia get the NVIDIA Shield, and why has it taken so long? We got half an answer at least.

Jen-Hsun Huang stopped short of saying that it would be available in Australia in the coming months, but said that there would be European and South American launches on the horizon.

When pressed on why it hadn’t actually landed in markets other than the US yet, Jen-Hsun Huang said that it was all about testing the viability of the product first.

When NVIDIA first made the Shield, it had no idea if it would be successful with consumers or supported by developers and as such it didn’t want to launch something that was going to be a global flop.

Jen-Hsun Huang believes that the product can now be measured as a success, and wants to release the Shield “in every market where there is a GeForce [graphics card] customer”.

Get ready, Australia: Shield is coming. Eventually.
