Bulky incandescents are pretty rare in desktop lamps these days, and it’s interesting to see how lighting designers are taking advantage of smaller bulbs — reducing lamps down to their absolute bare minimum. Take Jella, a super-slim aluminium stick that’s embedded with both LEDs and magnets, so you can reconfigure it any which way you want on the steel stand.
It’s was created by Lena Schlumbohm for her bachelor thesis at the FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences. For now, it’s just a concept, but the project just won third prize at IMM Cologne — an international furnishings show that kicks off the annual blitz of design fairs — which means that the attention might put it on the road to production.
Seems like it would be fun to have in the house for practical reasons, since you can shift the illumination where you want it and all, but also for more novel ones — -like pretending you’re conducting a laser light show or casting a spell with a radiant wand. [designboom]
