LaCie’s Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 Is As Fast As External Drives Get

Intel officially unveiled the details of its Thunderbolt 2 specification back in April, and while we’ve already seen the release of hardware like motherboards that support the Thunderbolt successor, LaCie’s new Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 is one of the first external drives that will officially support the blazing new connection.

Intel claimed that Thunderbolt 2 would support 20Gbps transfers in both directions, meaning you could copy and play 4K content at the same time. And LaCie’s Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 promises speeds up to 1,375MB/s, putting USB 3.0 to shame. The tiny black aluminium enclosure hides a pair of 500GB SSDs in a RAID 0 configuration — prioritizing speed over any kind of data redundancy — while a thermoregulated fan only whirs to life as needed, keeping noise to an absolute minimum.

LaCie promises the Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 will be available sometime in the first quarter of this year. And while specific pricing details haven’t been revealed, it’s safe to assume it won’t be the cheapest way to add an extra terabyte of storage to your workstation. [LaCie]
