How often do you remove a USB flash drive from your computer, place it somewhere on your desk, and then have it instantly disappear? Too often. It’s one of those bizarre mysteries of — life like socks going missing in the dryer — that LaCie may have just eradicated with its bulbous new Culbuto flash drive.
To say its form factor is unique is an understatement, but LaCie has a long history of adding more than just a dash of design to its storage products. Created by French designer Constance Guisset, the Culbuto features a hefty solid metal spherical base that keeps it upright when not in use. So on a messy desk it’s always visible like a submarine’s periscope breaking the surface of the water.
A slotted cap that can hold photos or a business card removes to reveal a USB 3 port at the end, and like those Weebles children’s toys, no amount of poking or prodding will cause it to permanently topple over. It’s available now in 16GB or 32GB capacities starting at $US50. A little on the expensive side, but if it never goes missing on your desk, you’ll never have to pay to replace it. [LaCie]
