A Third Of The Pirate Bay’s Uploads Is Nothing But Porn

You’d have to be crazy naive to think piracy flag-bearer The Pirate Bay is free of porn, but you’ll be forgiven for underestimating exactly how much is hiding out there. It’s 35 per cent. The Pirate Bay’s new uploads last year were 35 per cent porn, second only to TV and movies which combined make 44 per cent. Meanwhile music hardly even registered at a mere 9 per cent.

The numbers come by way of a new study by TorrentFreak which not only shows that porn is a huge chunk of the Pirate Bay’s 2013 uploads, but also that the share is increasing. The proportional percentage of porn-to-everything-else has leapt up a ton in the last year alone.

TorrentFreak illustrates it best with this handy chart:

A Third Of The Pirate Bay’s Uploads Is Nothing But Porn

Aside from the increasing prevalence of porn (will it take the lead next year!?) maybe the other most interesting tidbit is the relatively lack of audio uploads. Compared to almost every other category, audio has been virtually stagnant since roughly 2008. And while the birth of streaming music services may have halted its growth, it also doesn’t seem to have made a dent.

It’s fascinating data, and you can check out all of it in its extremely detailed glory over at TorrentFreak. Or you can just visit the Pirate Bay and do some hands-on… research. [TorrentFreak]
