This Is The Official Colour Of 2014

Pantone, the self-declared official body in control of the entire visible spectrum, has announced the colour of the year for 2014. You’re looking at it.

Dubbed Radiant Orchid — you can use its technical name PANTONE 18-3224 — it’s actually… kind of just… pinky purple? Still, a very nice shade of pinky purple. And, boy, you better get used to to seeing it around: when Pantone chooses a colour of the year, you can be certain you’ll see it in clothes and drapes and mugs and phone cases and who knows what else.

So why did Pantone choose Radiant Orchid as the colour of year? I’m so glad you asked! Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, explains:

An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.

Beguiling. The colour picks up the baton from 2013’s Emerald. Brace yourself for expensive purple — sorry, I mean, Radiant Orchid — products popping up in every shop very soon. [Pantone]
