The Next Web is reporting that Google is working on plans to offer up Chrome apps, usually found on the desktop, to the mobile ecosystems of iOS and Android. The site reports that the company is “currently building a toolkit to help developers create Chrome apps for Android and iOS, as well as port their existing Chrome apps to both mobile platforms.”
The rumour is fuelled by a GitHub repository — called Mobile Chrome Apps — which is owned by Michal Mocny, a Software Developer at Google. Little bit of a giveaway.
The documentation alongside the code suggests that a toolkit will help “developers create Android and iOS hybrid native apps with Chrome app polyfills.” Google declined to provide comment to The Next Web, but according the documentation the “apps will be good enough to publish to both Google Play and Apple’s App Store”. The first is hardly surprising, the latter may well be.
Of course, whether or not the code to facilitate all of this ever surfaces — and even then if it gets widely used — remains to be seen. Let’s wait and see. [The Next Web]
